In
addition to just getting out and diving, the Aquanauts use their hobby for the
betterment and support of their community. We actively recruit members at
student events such as K-Day and the Spring Fling.
We
also offer Discover Scuba a couple times
a year both as a fund raiser and as an opportunity for people to try SCUBA
diving with a certified instructor in Michigan Tech's pool for a minimal fee
before spending substantially more for formal SCUBA training.
Each
year the Aquanauts assist the City of Hancock with its Finnish winter
festival, Heikinpaiva, by facilitating a polar bear plunge.
Every
year the Aquanauts do a couple clean up dives. Some of these are cleanups
organized by the club, others are organized by various groups who ask us to lend
a hand. The aquanauts are always glad to help when ever possible. Typically,
two groups of aquanauts are formed during these cleanups, a dive group and a
surface support group. while the dive group collects rubbish in the water, the
surface support helps by replacing full bags with empty ones and pull in the
heavier objects. It is not uncommon to find tires, grills, and pipes, and many
more interesting items in the water.
