The Club was formed to provide both students and the community with the means to dive locally and affordably. Due to the isolation of the Keweenaw, there are few dive shops in the area. Access to tank fills, dive gear, dive buddies, and dive site information is not only affordable but also convenient for Club members.

Houghton can be found in the heart of the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends into Lake Superior. The surrounding land is mostly wilderness providing a variety of outdoor activities during surface intervals. Lake Superior, one of the five Great Lakes, is the world's largest lake by surface area and affords excellent SCUBA diving because of good visibility and an abundance of well preserved shipwrecks. Lake Superior is generally cold, ranging from 32 F (0 C) in winter and spring to 60 F (16 C) in the late summer and fall. The typical harsh weather and rocky coastline has caused the wreckage of many ships. Most of the surrounding coastal waters are part of the Keweenaw Underwater Preserve.

The Club is active in supporting several University and community activities. Club funding comes student activity fees, club membership fees, and donations.

Please contact us if you have any questions about the Aquanauts or diving in the Keweenaw.
